5 Things You MUST Quit Right Now!

We all have things that seem to hold us back. These things aren’t always completely obvious to us but they are things that if we become aware of we can truly start to make a significant change in our lives. Below are 5 things that you must quit right now if you want to start to turn your life around and bring success to you!

Trying to please everyone

“I can’t give you a sure-fire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time.” – Herbert Bayard Swope

We all fall into this trap. I am more than guilty of always trying to please everyone around me. In fact, it’s one of the biggest things I’m working on. For me, I’ve made many decisions in the past with the thinking of how I can be sure to please others even if it wasn’t how I would want to do things, and then if they weren’t pleased or happy with how things went I felt disrespected and I would get upset from it.

It’s important to understand that you can’t please everyone. And you shouldn’t try to anyways. You want success and you want to achieve things so, you have to have your goals in mind. Your goals don’t always align with what will please other people. What if you need to get another hour of work done but all your friends want to go out for the night? You have to see you can’t please them this time and that you have to continue to work on your goals and your plans first. People may not be aligned with you. They will have a different perspective or they will have different values and rules of how things should be done. You need to understand this. You can be considerate of others and be nice but make sure to have your goals and plans in mind first and not to try to please everyone. It’s just not possible.

Fearing change

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” – Lao Tzu

I recently talked about how fear can hold us back (3 Things That Keep Us From doing What We Want) and one fear that can hold you back is fear of change. Life is about growing and evolving. We need to be able to adapt to new things and new situations. Things are ever evolving, ask anyone who was born 50 or 60 years ago. There were no cell phones, no internet and now people live on their phones. People have more friends online than in the real world. Things are always changing.

So how can we apply this to life? Don’t fear to learn, don’t fear to grow and applying new ideas. Failure to change is failure to grow and failure to grow is to begin dying. Life is about growth about learning. We need to always seek growth and embrace it.

Living in the past

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, which is why we call it the present.”  – Bill Keane

We can all be guilty of holding a grudge or holding on to a regret sometimes. When we see old friends we love to talk about the past and relive things that happened. It can be in good fun and we recall some fond memories but we have to be sure not to live in the past. Some people will think of their past as their “hay day” but if you keep your vision on the past, and don’t look forward, things will never get better for you. You can enjoy the past and have fond memories up its best to keep a “what’s new, what’s next” style attitude towards the future. Have a clear vision of what you want and have a plan to achieve it. Don’t be stuck in the past, be sure to keep growing, evolving and learning from it!

Putting yourself down

“Believe in yourself, take on your challenges, and dig deep within yourself to conquer fears. Never let anyone bring you down. You got to keep going.” – Chantal Sutherland

You must stop putting yourself down ASAP. Your self-talk is the most important thing for you to achieve anything. The one person who has to believe in you to achieve what you want, MUST be you. No one else’s opinion matters. Don’t listen to what people say, you must know you can accomplish anything.

Even if you feel that putting yourself down is justified know this, you can change yourself in an instant. It all depends on you to change your view and perspective. Your attitude and view of yourself will affect you immensely. If you put yourself down when you make a mistake just know it’s a learning experience and you’re still good. Keep going. Things get rough sometimes but it’s how we respond and how to learn and grow from the experience that will determine how far we can truly go!

“You will never be free until you free yourself from the prison of your own false thoughts. If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done.” – Bruce Lee

When you get a good idea it’s important to research and work the idea out but don’t overthink the idea, that can lead to discouragement. When something happens that affects you negatively don’t dwell on it. It will only bring more pain and confusion. You don’t want to get too deep and you don’t want to overthink things because it can lead to problems that never existed to begin with. Overthinking can truly cause you to understand less a lot of times. If something happened deal with it, accept it and move on in a timely matter and get your mind focused back on what is truly important.
